This little gap is what’s called “excessive headspace.” It’s less than 0.020″ but it’s enough to cause several types of failures.

This is the underside of the bolt in a home-built 9mm AR. The barrel & the bolt were sourced from different manufacturers, and the variance in specs combined to create the gap. 

Moral: the little things *always* add up.
